I've always been short sighted (-2.25 right eye, -6.25 left eye) and after years of 'corrective eye surgery' being to of my Wish List the recent offers prompted me to have it done.I've always been a sportsman, playing rugby for 14 years, cycling for 20 years and karting and driving race cars for the last 3 years. I got away with contact lenses most of the time, but now at racing speed they became a bit of a nuisance, drying up or even popping out at times! They also got really sticky and cloudy after the first wear (I had the 6 monthly versions) no matter how clean I kept them and anyone who's had them will know of the pain putting them in and taking them out each day. It adds about 20 minutes to the mornings and is truly awful trying to prise them out before bed!Glasses too can be a nuisance, not least in the wet weather where you either need wipers or almost certainly a good clean 'coming in from the cold'.And they are really uncomfortable when wearing a racing helmet!I had a Consultation in Cardiff which was exactly the same as any eye test you have with any optician across the country. I was then told I was eligible for any of the eye surgery options, including Intralase Wavefront. The best thing is that there is no hard sell or someone (like me perhaps!) trying to persuade you to do it. It's entirely up to you and there is very much a 'take it or leave it' attitude which is refereshing these days.I booked my surgery a week later - yes that quickly - and given my crazy work, family and sports schedule (I'm also a lawyer, my wife's a doctor and we have a highly active 4 year old!) I wanted the Intralase Wavefront option as it promised the quickest results and quickest recovery time. The only issue for me was whether or not the laser 'suction cup' would fit in my eye socket, as my eyes are a bit deep set. I would only know once I'm sitting in the operating chair, so it was an anxious situation!I attended Bristol with my wife and the atmosphere was all very relaxed and casual. I met my surgeon who reiterated the risks outlined in the scary document you have to read and sign extensively! Indeed reading that is the most scary part of the whole process!I mentioned my concern about the suction cup fitting, as if it didn't fit you sign an authority allowing the surgeon to do LASEK instead. I didn't want that as it meant time off work, which I can ill afford, but on mentioning this to the surgeon he said there was no problem. If the cup didn't fit I wouldn't have to have LASEK if I didn't want it.That was a big relief to me, as it was a case of Intralase Wavefront or nothing at all!As described many times on this forum the procedure is relatively strauightforward and completely painless. The eye drops they give you work instantly and you feel nothing until you get home!Thankfully the suction cup did fit on both eyes and everything went well. The only disconcerting thing is that the surgeon asks you to look at a red light, but the light keeps flashing and to me looked like it was bobbing all over the place so you worry that your eye is moving all the time! Whether it does or not I don't know but everything turned out fine.I'm not sure about other people but I didn't notice any difference when I got up out of the chair. Your eyes feel like they are covered in whitewash, so everything is very hazy. You have a short consultation with another doctor who advises about the use of eyedrops and you are on your way home. During the car ride I couldn't really see much at all. It was all hazy. Did it work, didn't it work? I couldn't tell. After about an hour post surgery your eyes start to run and it feels like you have mild soap in your eyes so you need to take the anaesthetic eye drops provided. They are superb. They work instantly and provide a welcome relief.Unusually the thing that literally got up my nose was that my nose started running too, and before long your nose is blocked!!!When I got home (about 8pm) I went straight to bed, wearing the eye guards provided. The next morning is sensational. No pain, no runny eyes, no blocked nose(!) and perfect vision in my right eye! It really was like HD and I could see all the car number plates from my bedroom window. With my left eye it was a bit harder to tell, as it was still very hazy and like I say it's like having whitewash painted all over it. Having said that I could see detail I had no hope of seeing previously so it was certainly better. For example I couldn't read PG on a tea box at arms length before, now I can read the shampoo bottles 20 feet away. It's extraordinary. It is now a week since my op and the right eye seems to be getting clearer by the day, as is the left eye but the left eye is still a bit hazy so not quite perfect yet. I am impatiently waiting for the left eye to clear, as if it is as good as my right eye then that really would be something!I had my one week post-op check yesterday and all is good. No problems at all, just this haziness in my left eye.I was told both corneas were still swollen, and as the left eye was under the laser a bit longer it will take longer to heal but it'll get there. I was advised to keep taking the anti-inflammatory eye drops provided and return in 3 weeks time. I am so excited about this I can't tell you, as I was worried something was wrong with my left eye!Yes, it's only one week since surgery and I can't believe the clarity already. The left eye is hazy but it is certainly better. 80-90% better than before I would say with further improvement to come.Riding bikes and driving cars is no problem at all. Amazing. So fast.I'll keep you posted.I have a few "£500 off treatment" vouchers if anybody needs them. I'll fill them in and send them on. No charge.By all means contact me at mikehwilliams@hotmail.com if you need any vouchers, or if you want any further information about the procedure.Mike. :-)

Glasgow Surgeon

Hi. Just been for a pre-op consultation at Glasgow branch. I was disappointed that the previous surgeon, who had been there for ever, has now retired. Has anyone had surgery done by Dr. Saboor and any experiences to share??Also, can you actually see straight after your surgery? I'm worried about a) the pain from the suction thing; b) the clamps holding eyelids open; c) Horrible smell and, most importantly d) I might loose my vision altogether!:w00t:

Lasik Intralase wavefront at Glasgow

I am updating this topic in the bloggs forumI had been thinking about getting laser surgery for a couple of years and had looked into it quite considerably, then decided to stop being a chicken about it and actually go and speak to someone. I phoned about a consultation and spoke to a the brilliant staff in Glasgow (can I just say how helpful and kind they are, they all do everything to put you at your ease from the second you walk in the door!)My first consultation was fine, had all the tests, lots of different machines testing for all sorts of things - then a very thorough eye test. The optitian explained that I was suitable, seems they actually turn away about 20% of people. Because of my prescription, and the fact that I have large pupils I could only have the lasik, which suited me anyway as that was the one I wanted, she explained that due to my age (47) I would possibly need glasses for reading but my short sightedness would be fine and that I should end up with 20/20 vision after surgery. I agreed to the lasik intralase with wavefront due to the shorter healing time, less pain and also the laser cuts the flaps. I had lasik intralase wavefront yesterday, 3rd September 2011 at Glasgow. I was extremely nervous and the long waiting around times didn't help at all, (they do advise you that you will be there for several hours)Anyway.. A lovely young lady called Claire explained all the various drops (steroid eye drops and antibiotoc eye drops plus a dose of pain killer drops, Claire also showed me the eye sheilds and went through a list of do's and dont's.When I was taken through I was given a hairnet to put on, I was asked to lie down and was shown the machines, the surgeon asked me to confirm my name etc and what treatment I was having then his assistant cleaned my eyes all around ready for surgery....Drops were put in my eyes then I was told I would feel a bit of pressure. One of the parts I was dreading was the clamping open of the eye but it wasn't painful at all, just a bit uncomfortable. There was a bit of pressure when the suction was applied to my eye, (this took about 5-10 seconds per eye so wasnt too bad) Then he asked me to keep really still while he moved the flaps, then it was time to go under the laser. The nurse counted down the seconds, it was only about 25 seconds or so while you had to look into the light. The smell was disgusting , nothing I can really describe, but there was absolutley no pain! The surgeon then positions the flap back down using a lot of cold water. It didn't take long at all and I was soon back in the waiting room with by bag of potions and my old glasses.About 5 mins later i went to see the opticial for a final check to make sure everything was okay, advised that I when I got home I should go and lie down as I would want to keep my eyes closed - they weren't kidding about the eyes closed!I did as they advised and went straight to bed but no sleep for me! After about an hour the pain started to kick in, a bit like a bad poke in the eye after touching an onion! I finally gave in and used the painkiller drops and within seconds of the drops the pain eased. This morning I went back for my check up. My eyes were checked and I was asked to read from the chart, was told I was ok to drive and it seems my distance vision is now 20/20 just 24 hours after surgery, it's just amazing!!! The optician says that it will probably keep improving over the next week as well, I am back on Friday for another check. I was having problems yesterday with close up things, couldn't see to read my email, or read a text on my phone. Even this morning I was having to concentrate to do it. I was advised to get reading glasses (from the pound shop) as it should only be temporary - this evening I am sitting at the computer writing this with no reading glasses on and not having any problems at all - I would say a 100% improvement from this morning.I have no idea why it took me so long to do this, the best thing I ever did, no pain , slight bloodshot eyes, my eyes are a little bit dry but then I only had the surgery yesterday, the word I would use is WOW!!If you are thinking of having eye surgery and would like £500 off your treatment then please email me athubba64@gmail.comor send me a private message, just send me your name and address and I will post our the voucher by first class post.

1 year update and still 20/20 vision

Here is a summary of my treatment and the last 12 months:I originally went to one of Optimax's competitors, but during the consultation I felt like I was on a conveyor belt, no real personal sevice and they avoided my "risk" questions.Couple months later I went to Optiimax at Canary Wharf in London for a consultation. Very personal, very thorough and gave detailed explanation of my "risk" concerns. My mind was put at rest.I then went home and did some Research on the consultants available and decided to have the treatment at Optimax in Finchley, London. On 9/9/09 I had Intralase Wavefront Lasik Treatment in both eyes. I was short sighted and have astigmatism. Treatment itself was completely painless. Couple hours after treatment I had some discomfort, but never had to take the painkillers I was given.Day 2 I had one bloodshot eye and it was slightly sore (felt a bit like a contact lens that has dried up).Day 3 I had a follow up test...vision already the same as when I wore contacts.Day 7 and vision is now 20/20. No discomfort whatsoever. Having treatment was one of the best things I have ever done.Day 14 and I feel like I have experienced a miracle. daytime and night time vision is better than I ever had with glasses or contact lens. Here I am 3 weeks later, all the sport I do tennis/football/golf is so much better with my "new eyes". I am really looking forward to going on holiday next month to a hot country, when normally I would suffer from dry eyes with contact lens.November….just been on holiday and it was wonderful not to have to suffer from dry eyes with my contact lens. The clarity of my vision was really highlighted on my trip.December and is fantastic how I can see all the Christmas decorations and lights so clear and colourful. On 20 Dec had my 3 month check up, both eyes confirmed at 20/20 vision and both have healed completely. Everything about this surgery has exceeded my expectations.March, and I have just returned from a skiing trip. Once again having had laser eye surgery has given me yet more benefits. I was able to see the awesome view of the Alps in crystal clear vision for the very first time. And I was much better able to read the pistes and plot my journey, avoiding ice and other dangers. This was my best ever ski trip.Haven't mentioned this before but I am also a football referee, refereeing in amateur leagues in Surrey. Let me just say I am having my best ever season, so much easier to make those decisions when your eyesight is 20/20.It's now April, wish it was a bit warmer, but enjoying the beautiful colours of spring. It's now May and enjoying swimming in the outdoor pool at my health club, another activity which is so much better without contact lens. It's now June, am looking forward to watching the World Cup and being able to view the TV screen in the pub no matter how far away, Oh the joys of having 20/20 vision. It's now August and am still enjoying the outdoor life. Currently doing some football coaching with school kids at summer camp. Great to be able to be outdoors come rain or shine and not have to wear contact lens or glasses.September and went for my 1 year check up at Optimax (by coincidence on the exact anniversary of treatment 9/9), amazingly my sight had improved again. Consultant said my eyes had healed perfectly and I was now officially discharged.Having laser eye surgery was money well spent, and I will save money over the coming years by not having to buy glasses and contacts lens. And potential patients I still have some £500 off vouchers for treatment at any Optimax branch:Optimax have now improved their offer. The offer is:-free consultation-£500 off Wavefront treatment (with Lasik or Lasek)-interest free credit. To get this offer simply e mail me for one of the vouchers (it is part of their recommend a friend scheme). I didn't realise there were so many risks with the surgery, just reading through the consent form has petrified me - I have 3 very young children to look after full time so need to know about any complications that may occur. It was relatively pain free and apart from the first night where my eyes streamed til midnight and felt slightly uncomfortable it was a walk in the park. I managed to get about 5 hours sleep in the end. The following day i had my check up @15:00 and was able to read the 4th line down with my left eye and 3rd with my right..not great..but here i am on day 4 and i can now see the 8th line down from a eye test chart printed from the net. Also a good test is number plates.Walking back from the station on day 2 i could see one at 40 paces..now 70 paces on day 4. For the record Dr Patel told me to rest my eyes completely on day 1 and 2 and that means eyes shut as much as possible and no TV/PC use !!

I still have some mistiness and the odd sharp pain and am now down to taking the eyedrops 4 times a day and the refresh drops about 5/6 times a day..definately no dry eye syndrome so far and my eyes have improved every day.

Let's see if this continues..From my research and also chatting with a frriend of the family who works at a hospital which does eye surgery i'm expecting it to get worse before it gets better and not get anxious when it does..but..early days and easier said that done i guess.

Will update with any major news. My prescription is relatively high left eye -7.75 and right eye -8.0. I have done some research around ten hours, and have found a lot of conflicting information. The array of options is quite daunting. I have always tried in all my major decision making processes to decide on the best quality at the lowest price (Sounds obvious however difficult to achieve). The big question comes down to what is the acutal difference between Optimax and Ultralase. I will start with the case for both companies. Optimax suggests that you can get the same treatment with them for half the price of the other major companies (I presume this is in reference to Ultralase etc). Ultralase suggests that the treatment and lifetime guarantee service offers enhanced results. With Ultralase due to my high prescription Ultra Elite with Lasik and wavefront seems to be the best answer (Recommended to me by Ultralase consultant) . This will cost around 4k. I have a appt with Optimax in January 2010. From my research if I am recommended for surgery, it will be wavefront lasik intralase blade-less technology like Ultralase. However the cost is likely to be around 50% discount from Ultralase and lesser discount with others. This information seems to be understood by most and widely available. From what I can understand the ONLY advantage held by Ultralase with the treatment, Ultra Elite is the added capability to smooth out minor imperfections in the eye. Which I think that Optimax cannot achieve with their equipment. Everything otherwise seems to be the same equipment wise.THE BIG QUESTION THAT WE ALL WANT TO KNOW, IS WHAT IS THE EXACT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OPTIMAX EQUIPMENT AND ULTRALASE EQUIPMENT ??????. The Ultralase lifetime guarantee (Including free retreatment if required) adds much weight to the Ultralase option. The Optimax lifetime guarantee seems to only be really valid for one year retreatment wise. I do expect to need retreatment maybe one or even two more times in my lifetime, which again seems to add weight to the Ultralase option(Costs!!) due to my age 25 years old.I will conclude by evaluating in my opinion, that Ultralase might be better if you are younger(higher or lower prescription), and hence the inital higher costs will be outweighed by the retreatment costs saved. Optimax might be better if you expect to have one treatment in your lifetime and no further treatments.I would much welcome any futher posts, and the question what is really the difference between these two companies and others. I havent decided yet but I think Ultralase would be best for me due to my age and my potential retreatment. Hence I cannot see any real difference between Optimax and Ultralase. Thanks for reading,James

How about after care?

How soon after surgery can I use mascara (not that I wear it much)? Also how am i supposed to sleep? I spoke to a Mr. Gandhi who was quite helpful and tried to reassure me that I am suitable for treatment even though I have had two different squints in my right eye (Even though they have now been rectified through surgery) I don't have a prism in my right lens any more due to the surgery, but I do have problems aligning my right eye with what I'm looking at (Or so it feels to me, even though Mr Gandhi said it is not noticeable)I don't know if I confused him, as I put down on the question form that had a lazy eye not a squint. I think he sort of understood what I meant, but I'm not so good with explaining eye surgery! Also, I don't know why, but in didn't put any dilating drops in my eyes either. Could this affect me having the surgery done? Would I need to go back and have this looked at before I went in and had the operation in November?Do you think I should still get it done? Thanks : )

Very successful laser eye surgery

HiI originally went to one of Optimax's competitors, but during the consultation I felt like I was on a conveyor belt, no real personal sevice and avoided the "risk" questions.Couple months later I went to Optiimax at Canary Wharf in London for a consultation. Very personal, very thorough and gave detailed explanation of my "risk" concerns. I then went home and did some Research on the consulatants available and decided to have the treatment at Optimax in Finchley, London. On 9/9/09 I had Intralase Wavefront Lasik Treatment in both eyes. I was short sighted and have astigmatism. Treatment itself was completely painless. Couple hours after treatment I had some discomfort, but never had to take the painkillers I was given. Day 2 I had one bloodshot eye and it was slightly sore (feels a bit like a contact lens that has dried up). Day 2 I had a follow up test...vision already the same as when I wore contacts. Day 7 and vision is now 20/20. Having treatment was one of the best things I have ever done.Day 14 and I feel like I have experienced a miracle. daytime and night time vision is better than I ever had with glasses or contact lens.So I can only say for me it was definitely worth every penny spent. I have some £500 off vouchers for Optimax, so if anyone would like one please text me on 07860 824 598 and I will call you to get your address to send one.Stephen

Will Lazer Treatment correct a squint in my right eye?

Hi guys, im hoping to have lazer eye treatment both to improve my vision and consequently correct my squint in my right eye, which is visible when i do not wear my contacts or when i am tired...do you think an improvement in my vision would counteract the squint?

Retreatment following Lasik - Epi-Lasek or Lasik?

I had my laser eye surgery in July 2008 (Intralase Lasik with wavefront) and have been going back for post op checkups regularly since. My eyes have only really settled in the last month or two, but I still wasn’t 100% happy with the results and recently started getting frequent headaches. So last week I booked in to see a surgeon (the first time this had been offered since my op last year) and he agreed that the residual astigmatism in my left eye was causing me problems and that it would be appropriate to re-treat. He explained the two methods of re-treatment Epi-Lasek and Lasik, and that he felt Lasik was the more appropriate and to book in to have it done in a couple of weeks.I was surprised when I went out to reception and was offered Monday (today), but went and made the arrangments to have Monday and Tuesday off from work.So today I had my pre-op consultation (with a different surgeon), who went through similar tests and agreed that my left eye was a problem, described the two methods of treatment, and also described the complications that could result from re-lifting the flap and recommended I have Epi-Lasek! He convinced me that this was the best course of action because of the complications of possible ripples in the flap, growth of skin cells under the flap (which might then need to be lifted again to scrape them out) and the risk of scar tissue forming under the flap. He’d already asked how much time I had booked off and sent me back out to reception and explained to them that I was now having Epi-Lasek. The receptionist asked if I had the whole week booked off, I said no, I had a meeting on Wednesday that I couldn’t miss and she said would I like to call work and get the time off, which I couldn’t.So at this point I became quite upset and we went to a side room for a chat. So, I’ve waited for my eyesight to settle, as advised by several optometrists. When I asked them about the flap healing and not being able to be lifted again, then told me that wasn’t a concern at all and that the flap can be lifted for many years. Then one surgeon advised to have the flap lifted, the other advised that it had healed very well and he wouldn’t advise lifting it again.I’ve taken a rain check. Any advice?

PETERBOROUGH CLINIC

Can anyone let me know what their experiences are of the Peterborough clinic? I had my treatment on 18 June. The actual treatment has been completely painless. As the anesthetic wore off there was slight burning sensation - nothing major at all. The vision was blurry for the whole evening. I slept comfortably!! VERY Dry eyes when I needed to get up in the middle of the night. Still pain free in the morning, no streaming of or redness of the eyes.Next day appointment was satisfactory - 20/20 in my left eye.Inflammation on my left eye so was asked to continue with the drops - hourly - vision has detiarated since, but have been told that once the inflammation has gone and then eye drops stop the vision will come back!!! Morning vision is worse but then as the day goes the vision improves a little and still not perfect. The difference of the left eye vision and the right eye is a little too much but I am hoping when the vision is corrected to what it should be then I shall be happier. I am getting a little impatient now and can't wait for it all to be right!!

Zyoptix laser surgery ? is it good ?

Hello everyone, I hope you will be able to help me. I am thinking of going for lasik surgery but am not too sure for which eye laser technique to go for.I read online, that zyoptix laser is quite good for an eye laser surgery. It seems to be similar to lasik but more precise. Unfortunately I dont feel to have enough information on it, the only resources found on it being and the official website. This is why I am asking for help on this forum. Has anyone tried zyoptix lasik or has any another resources than the two I pointed out ?Thanks a lot for your help.

Dry Eyes

I had laser eye surgery last year, i am suffering from very dry eyes, and are going to have silicone/collogen plugs (or something) later this month. i am aware that this is under anasthetic drops, however i have not been informed whats really involved, can i drive that day? do i require anytime off work after procedure? help?!

Quesions about Laser Eye Surgery

I have been thinking about having laser eye surgery done for the past couple of months (and have been saving as much money possible to put down as a deposit).
