Do not forget that CK surgery is not permanent and will require follow up treatments every 3-4 years to maintain level of reading vision.

Similar to the way in which you would need an increased strength of reading glasses as you age

:angry:I went for CK treatment at the end of last December 07. £810 for one eye to be treated. After the op I must admit I could see for about three weeks then my sight in that eye went back to how it used to be, Having let my eye settle for a few months I rang Optimax in Manchester and they invited me back for a check up and re-treatment on the same day at no extra cost. I had a second op to go over the seven spots that were done the first time around, again I could see, but only for a few weeks as my eyesight went back to having to use reading glasses. I rang Optimax and they said let my eye settle for a few months then ring them for another appointment and this is the position I am in at the moment, My eyes are no better today and the same as they were before I spent my hard earned cash and not to say the time I have had off work traveling the 120 mile round trip to Manchester. I do hope they will sort my problem out next month when I ring them and really do hope they don't ask for any more money.

Just thought I would share this. I had CK 2 weeks ago in liverpool and can now use the computer, read the paper, and set the alarm clock without glassess, it is so good to go shopping and be able to see the sell by dates on items in the supermarket without fumbling round with glassess, I would recomend this to anyone

Hi All,

Well I had my appointment for CK on Saturday and I chose not to have it done even though the surgeon said that I was suitable (I had laser surgery last year and this was very successful (not with Optimax)).

They did some tests when I got there and I saw the surgeon who was very nice and totally honest. I have an astigmatism in the eye that he would have operated on, whether this was there before laser surgery or was caused by it he didn't know. He put those black glasses on and slipped in the lens and showed me what it would be like after I had CK. My near sight was not much better than it is now but the long sight in that eye would have been reversed and it was a lot worse than before - I couldn't see very much at all out of that eye. He said my short sight was not too bad for my age (over 50) so it seems that I didn't have much to gain and a lot to lose which he agreed with.

I am really glad I went though, and although it was not for me, I would urge anyone thinking of having it done, to make sure they ask for the preview with the glasses if they are not offered it. Hope this is of some help.

I was really sorry to read the previous post, and my sympathies go out to Hilda/Helen. My experience - see my posts in 'Blogs' - couldn't have been more different in every way. (At least, that's true so far). At the end of the day, I guess it's one of those things where it works for you or it doesn't - but for many, this poster's experiences may indicate that it's a risk too far. But: please don't form your opinion just on the basis of this - like I said, my experience was entirely positive. Fingers crossed - my op was less than a week ago.

Hi there, well i am afraid i had CK 5 weeks ago and feel it was the worse decision i have made, sorry. I had read up on laser surgery as my husband had it 2 years ago and it was very successful, as i only needed reading glasses it wasnt for me. Then this offer of CK came in the post and i am sorry to say i just went ahead and booked it on the previous success of my husband. The consultation and subsequent surgery on the same day, was all too easy, it wasnt made clear to me that my long vision would be affected, and i was told that there was no recovery time needed, rubbish!!! 5 weeks on, still need glasses to read, headaches every day with eye strain as my prescription is different now, blurred vision without glasses, my eye feels like it bulging out of its socket, driving is hard. My surgeon at Manchester is very nice but the best he can offer at the moment is that i wait 2 months for my eyes to settle then if i want a reversal i can have one, but that then involves laser treatment not CK. so my advice is, ask for the glasses with a contact lens in that shown how your sight will be once done (something i wasnt offer but found out about later) go away from the consultion with these glasses for a week, dont be tempted to go straight into the procedure. Will let you know how i go on. Hilda

Good luck with your appointment, I hope it goes well. I haven't ruled out CK yet but I think I'll see if my problem can be solved by wearing contacts first. I would love to hear the result of your appointment. Optimax do seem to be totally honest about who is or is not suitable for treatment. :)

Hi, I'm going for an appointment at the end of this month, and am glad I've read all your comments. I think I will be dubious also but I will reserve judgement. I've also had previous laser treatment with a competitor and have had no problems apart from the ageing process and the need for glasses for some reading and close-up work. The fact that there are no success stories on this site for CK is a bit off-putting. I must say I was drawn by the special offer but I'll be back with my opinion after the appointment! Regards Joan

Hi Paul, thank you for taking the time and trouble to reply. Actually I'm having serious doubts about it. It would be nice not to need reading glasses for a few years but measured against long term problems it doesn't look so attractive.

I went for a CK consultation yesterday but unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be!)was not suitable as my cornea were not 'thick' enough. You need a minimum of 500 microns and mine are 495! The surgeon was very good (he had only done 20 CK ops) and thoroughly explained everything (even after it was established I was not suitable). In fact even if I had been suitable I think he would have put me off having the op as there seems to be a strong possibliltiy that you will end up with astigmatism. With 495 micron corneas I am also unsuitable to have laser surgery and the only alternative for me is lens replacement (£1200 per eye). It is worth noting that I was the 3rd person to fail that morning. I had a special offer so am entitled to my £60 consultation back. Trust this helps

Hi, has anyone had CK treatment? I'm thinking about having this done at Optimax in Leeds. I know Optimax haven't been offering this procedure for very long and I would love to hear of any experiences - good or bad, in particular what it actually feels like on the day. I know another poster is asking about CK after laser surgery, I've never had anything like this done before and I'm more than a bit nervous. :w00t:
