I had my laser eye surgery in July 2008 (Intralase Lasik with wavefront) and have been going back for post op checkups regularly since. My eyes have only really settled in the last month or two, but I still wasn’t 100% happy with the results and recently started getting frequent headaches.

So last week I booked in to see a surgeon (the first time this had been offered since my op last year) and he agreed that the residual astigmatism in my left eye was causing me problems and that it would be appropriate to re-treat. He explained the two methods of re-treatment Epi-Lasek and Lasik, and that he felt Lasik was the more appropriate and to book in to have it done in a couple of weeks.

I was surprised when I went out to reception and was offered Monday (today), but went and made the arrangments to have Monday and Tuesday off from work.

So today I had my pre-op consultation (with a different surgeon), who went through similar tests and agreed that my left eye was a problem, described the two methods of treatment, and also described the complications that could result from re-lifting the flap and recommended I have Epi-Lasek! He convinced me that this was the best course of action because of the complications of possible ripples in the flap, growth of skin cells under the flap (which might then need to be lifted again to scrape them out) and the risk of scar tissue forming under the flap. He’d already asked how much time I had booked off and sent me back out to reception and explained to them that I was now having Epi-Lasek. The receptionist asked if I had the whole week booked off, I said no, I had a meeting on Wednesday that I couldn’t miss and she said would I like to call work and get the time off, which I couldn’t.

So at this point I became quite upset and we went to a side room for a chat. So, I’ve waited for my eyesight to settle, as advised by several optometrists. When I asked them about the flap healing and not being able to be lifted again, then told me that wasn’t a concern at all and that the flap can be lifted for many years. Then one surgeon advised to have the flap lifted, the other advised that it had healed very well and he wouldn’t advise lifting it again.

I’ve taken a rain check. Any advice?

Hi Donnah, I've thoroughly read your question, this is what I think,,, the best outcome for your eyesight is your top priority and should be your ONLY consideration. You have received conflicting advice from different surgeons, it seems clear to me that the re-lifting of the flap carries a potential serious risk to your eyesight and epi lasek presents an overall lower risk, don't gamble with your eyesight, if you can't get the time off work then leave it until you can make a plan to get the time, if the re-lifting of the flap caused the forementioned complications you would regret it for the rest of your life, especially as you had been warned. Finally if two professionals have given conflicting advice it would be perfectly reasonable to get a third opinion from another, don't be fobbed off by anybody this is far to important,,,Best wishes,,,,,
