I went for a consultation at the Newcastle Clinic on Wednesday 26th August. First impressions of the company were not good. Reception staff gossiped about nights out whilst Radio One played in the background. However I persevered. I was ushered to a compuer and I filled in the medical questionnaire which I must say is a bit basic.
I saw Kieran the ophthalmologist and we discussed that the only option available to me was Intralase Wavefront LASIK due to my pupil size. I was happy with this as I had a promotion code enabling me to get this for £1995. I was taken through to the reception area where things just went rapidly downhill. I used to work for a bank and if personal finances are being discussed I would protect the customers’ privacy by at least taking them into an office. After all this is a lot of money and I felt totally rushed to make a decision.
I was not even offered a seat, my payment options were discussed infront of other staff and customers. I was given a piece of paper with my price circled on it! I said I came through on a promotion code the young girl said how much was it and I said £1995 and she said yep we can do it for that. Which gives me the impression that they are plucking prices from thin air.
I was booked in for the 30th Sep. However I received a phone call last week from Kieran to say that he had discussed with the surgeon and the surgeon wanted to change the procedure from Lasik to Epi Lasek with Wavefront. I hadn’t really researched this and felt that I wasn't given an adequate explanation but it did have something to do with my pupil size!!! I asked for a couple of days to think about it.
I have just got off the phone to Optimax Newcastle as I decided I would like to speak with the surgeon regarding why the procedure had been changed. A young girl on the end of the phone said "well that’s what the medical review is for" I stated that even if I was going into hospital for the most basic of procedures I would be able to speak to the surgeon weeks beforehand, as how am I supposed to give informed consent 45 mins before the procedure? I wanted to know why I was being considered for Epi LASEK when on the documentation that Optimax gives at the consultation my prescription is way too high. I was told by the girl the Wavefront counteracts this!!!!! Not really a good enough explanation!
I was not given any option for a call back from the surgeon. We are taking about my eyesight. So I cancelled my appointment and was told my card would be refunded the £30 deposit to which the girl hung up!
Not really the best impression I have received. All I wanted was some information. A lost customer. I now have a consultation booked with Optical Express.
