Hi all,
I had Lasik intralase wavefront in Belfast Optimax 2 days ago and thought it would be useful for others to hear of my experience as I couldn't find too much on belfast or my prescription when I was looking.
My prescription is an astigmatism - right sph -0.25 cyl -3.25 left sph -0.5 cyl -3.5
The consultation - I had my consultation a month ago, the staff were lovely and helpful, I came out wanting to have lasik after reading the consent form and looking up the internet I started freaking out slightly and changed my mind about 20 times in the following month. I made an appointment to talk to Dr Ho and he put some of my fears at ease.
On the day - I was completely freaking out by this stage a complete mess so took some Kalms which helped a bit. My surgeon was Dr Madhusudhan - I meet him before hand and he told me I would need to calm down for him to do his best work, he was very good.
The actual surgery was fine, I have sensitive eyes which tingle when I keep them open too long and I was worried this would be really uncomfortable but didn't notice a thing. They put on my hair net then I went in, I was lying under the first machine thinking to myself, what am I doing, can I change my mind, but just thought to myself it was too late I would have to do it!!! So first thing that happens is drops are put in your eyes then then the suction ring for the intralase, I didn't even really feel this, it did tingle slightly which I said and was told not to talk, which then worried me incase I ruined my surgery by talking but it didn't. So this takes about 20 seconds per eye, they don't use the clamp at this stage. Once both eyes are done they move you over to the next machine to do the laser, the clamp is put on to your eye here, which is strange but doesn't hurt at all, you have to hold completely still at this stage which I just ended up holding my breathe for most of the time!! You are asked to look at a green/red light which is a bit hard as it starts as one light thens splits up in to loads of light, so hopefully didnt move my eye too much I wasnt too sure where I was looking!! this doesn't take too long either and was over before I knew it, every one mentions the smell which is a bit strange!!!
So the result!!!!
I got up off the seat and couldn't really see anything, I could see people but it was a complete blur!! No chance of me reading the clock like they do on TV!!! I was told this was due to my prescription so tried not to be too perturbed. After a quick check I went home.
1st night - I was a blur all night, although did notice a big difference my left eye seemed really good but my right wasn't that great. I had bandaged contact lenses in which I found really uncomfortable, even woke up in the middle of the night and my left contact had moved and I couldnt see a thing but blinked a couple of times and it was fine. What no one told me was the amount of drops you are given for the first two weeks, one you take six times a day another 4 times and another 12!!! so a lot of drops and on the first night you have one to be put in every hour for the 1st 3 hours. I'm glad Im off as don't fancy having to put drops in so often in work!!
Next day- My left eye was so irritated but when I went back for my consult they took out the contacts and I was fine. They did a test and my right eye was better than my left but I put that down to the irritation in my left as it is back to being the better eye. I was told I could drive the next day but I dont think I'm any better than this yet, hopefully this will improve by the end of the week!!
2 days from surgery - I dont think my eyes are much better than yesterday, left ones good, right is still a bit blurry but alot better than before the treatment, but no irritation. Just hope I get a bit of an improvement, fingers crossed.
I will keep you posted.......

Hi Amanda
many thanks for the update. I had some minor irration in one eye, but it cleared up after a few days. Like wise light sensitivity should disaappear after a few weeks, it is all part of the normal healing process I understand.
So POTENTIAL PATIENTS:
the good news is that I still have some £500 off vouchers. These are good for any type of Lasik or Lasek treatment. AND your consultation is free too. So please e mail me your full name and address (ideally before you book your consultation) and I will post the voucher first class.
Please read all my blogs about my amazing eye surgery. Simply click on my user name (StephenB), then click on "Show all posts by this member".
I am aged 53, have worn glasses/contact lens since aged 8, and now for the first time ever I have 20/20 vision. Is the best money I ever spent. You won't regret it.

So its been a few weeks since I have written anything so thought I would give you the progress.
Its now 6 weeks since I got lasik. I went for my 4 week aftercare appointment and my eyes have gotten slightly worse, no longer have 20/20 vision and still have an astigmatism, but I am still driving standard. I do find my sight is variable some times I have good days and some bad.
My irritation in my left eye has gone but it did last for about a month and the perfect sight with this eye isn't so good.
Hopefully I will get some improvement but not counting on it.

Hi
it seems that it is now 6 weeks since the treatment, by which time I think your vision should be stabalising.
At the last aftercare visit what did the consultant recommend ? Is he/she waiting to see what happens at next visit ? Or maybe you are one of the very rare patients that needs retreating ?

It is now 11 months since I have had my eyes done. I was discharged in January as I had some epilithel ingrowth so they had to check that it didn't get any worse.
As far as my sight is concerned, it is great don't need glasses for anything, my astigmatism is now 0.5 in both eyes.
I do still have dry eyes from time to time and have to use eye drops everyday but am down to 2 a day. For some reason my left eye has been quite irritated the last couple of weeks as if there is something in it so hopefully this go away?
Has anyone else had irritation so far after?
