Surgery: Intralase wavefront with lasik

Had wavefront as i had large pupils;had lasik as i was scared about long recovery time and enhanced pain with lasek.

First of all i was quietly nervous about the surgery wasnt really sure although i did look at a few videos online (i turned them off though as dont really want to see the gory details it is better to read up first as it was slightly off putting seeing it happen. watch afterwards to see how brave you are and how skilled the guys performing it must be (wouldnt try it meself)) surgery wasnt so bad although it was uncomfortable and a little scary when the surgeon applied pressure to the suction device it didnt hurt but was not exactly enjoyable.

after surgery my eyes watered like mad and i was itching to rub them but didnt as advised not too. went back in for a checkup after 30 mins or so and given more anaesthestic which helped alot.

Went to bed for a few hours and the stinging subsided. Being a contact lens wearer i was a little more used to the itchiness as i had it alot with them anyways. still uncomfy but had it before so to speak.

never had a problem with my vision at all i can see perfectly and have 20.15 vision in both eyes in all checkups. (i have my 3 month ish checkup in about 3 weeks and hopefully it has improved further (does seem more stable). At my office i can see the results flip chart for another team which is at least 15-20 metres away and read figures of it which i think is pretty good so cant argue on that score at all.

some side effects i noticed was dry eyes, seemed to be putting drops in every 15 mins or so for the first month or 2. Think this varies with patients and some heal faster than others. My reviewers advice was to use artificial tears as often as i could, (i didnt scrimp at all used loads....try getting clinitas hydrate as they can be resealed up to 12 hours per doppet which is great to use often. i was declared dry eyed by my consultant afterwards and also given lubrication gels to use in the morning and before bed also which i did. let your consultants know if you experience dry eyes as they will prescribe these gels too if necessary.

now i do find myself using them less and less and from around 40 drops a day now im using 4-5. i really do think loading the drops up to start help as it ensures the eye is moist whilst its healing. I read somewhere that the nerves etc regen better when wet as that is how the eye is intended (i dont remember the scientifics) so i do believe this has helped. Dont get me wrong when i first had surgery and for a couple of months i did think i would have dry eyes forever but now i am beginning to see a big improvement and think the above has contributed to that.

finally halos and glares seem to be fine to me although i do get the odd glare or starburst around the odd car light. It is directional and only happens when they are like going over a hill and the light is flaring up otherwise i cant really tell people whether it is lasik induced or not as didnt really look beforehand. Think it is only when it is in dazzling mode i.e pointing at me directly, definately nothing that stops me doing what i want at day or night so i think it is the type of light and direction as usually it is fine only a small glow around the lights if overall lighting is very dark. one thing i notice is the tv button in pitch darkness it does have a ring around it but outside nothing is so bad i can look at the moon for example and it is just the moon no rings or halos. I have no issues driving at all and that is driving a motorbike with a sometimes dirty visor which i really should clean more often but thats for another forum hehe.

Also for the halos glare etc it is a little compounded by all the drops that you are putting in your eyes. I noticed that whilst using drops more they can be alot worse; however now that i need them less and less, the glare etc has improved greatly.

i think to summarise i would recommend any recent patients to overdose with artificial tears ( so long as preservative free) in the first 3 months and combined with taking care of eyes as per recovery instructions. It may of only worked for me but i do think it would help most people to try. I was scared about operating on my eyes but i had in mind i would only do it for the best that money could buy as i didnt want to leave things to chance; likewise as advised to keep my eyes wet as can be i didnt want to risk that either so did both of these and i truly believe i am now getting vision as i want it to be and given i reckon 3 more months i dont think i will need eye drops any more.

further edit: re loading drops up. Load em up at least the first two months. Do em at least two months and then you may be able to sense your eyes watering themselves. I cant explain what it feels like and its still very early days for me but i do seem to feel them wetting themselves a little, plus my eyes look wetter when i look in the mirror my lower lid has moisture on at the top which i didnt see before since surgery.

If anyone want any more info or whatever pm me.
