I am quite concerned about some of the answers given on the subject of dry eyes by the administrators.

For instance Nina frequently writes 'People with dry eyes are normally advised against LASIK treatment as the nerve endings responsible for tear formation are temporarily disturbed'. This is misleading as the nerves are actually 'cut' not 'disturbed' and they have to grow back which can take months or even years. Research has shown that when they do grow back density is often reduced and in a small minority of cases they don't grow back at all. 'Temporarily' is misleading as it can take far longer for the nerves to re generate. 'Disturbed' makes it sounds as though the nerves are being gently prodded, when in fact they are being severed.

Nick has written 'if you do not experience dry eye with your lenses out then you will probably be ok for LASIK'. This was my situation before surgery and I can tell you has not been the case. Since the surgery I have suffered from debiliatating dry eye syndrome which is affecting every aspect of my life.

In nearly every post relating to dry eye it is mentioned 'The best way to determine your suitablility is to attend a consultation where doctors will perform a dry eye test'. Well I discussed the fact my eyes were dry when wearing contacts at my consultation and I was NEVER given a dry eye test. I was simply told Lasik would be suitible.

Before my surgery I read these forums and obviously thought they would give the most accurate information, being the laser surgery provider. Since looking at other sites I do not believe this to be the case. If I hadn't trusted this site in the first place maybe I wouldn't be in the miserable situation I'm in now.

Hi there,

I am sorry to hear you haven't benefited from your surgery. I was just curious to know when you had your consultation did you not have the test where a puff of air is put into your eye? This is as far as I am aware to test for dry eye. In my consultation before I saw the surgeon I had this test and two others one to get a map of my eye and the other to get my exact perscription ( the one with the hot air balloon). You should definitely make a point of mentioning this to Optimax if it wasn't carried out.

Shelley

The test where they puff air onto the surface of your eye is for glaucoma, not dryness.

I'm not sure there is a test for that at all. I certainly never had one before my treatment.

Hi guys.  I had my eyes done (intraLase wavefront Lasik)  on sat, so probably too early to comment on myself but safe to say I have no dry eye problem yet.  But on reading this post I have to say that I was compleatly unaware of there being a major risk of getting dry eye problems, and there was no test done for me - in fact I wore contact lenses for over 10 years and I wasn't asked once about any problems I had suffered from in the past.  I agree that Optimax deffiently skims over the risks and make it all seem very simple and easy - which for some people it clearly isn't.

Hi there, Yea I thought that puff test was for dry eye but it mustn't be and if that is the case then I didn't have a test for dry eye either. However, I cannot complain as I have not suffered at all from my surgery. personally I think this is down to my usage of flax seed oil and vitamin c before and after my surgery. I do agree perhaps optimax could make more of a point in bringing across the severity of some of the outcomes of surgery but then at the end of the day you do sign that terrifying consent form. I think everyone goes into surgery thinking no it will never happen to me and then if something goes wrong you don't know what to do. Although I am biased I suppose since I am happy enough 3 months post surgery If I had problems I am sure I would be quick to find fault if I had issues myself.
