Q20737 - FAQ: I have type 2 diabetes and have been told I should not have laser surgery - is this correct?

Good afternoon Paula,

We can perform laser surgery if you have type 2 diabetes, it is usually type 1 that is not considered.  However, if you are taking insulin to control the diabetes or, there are signs of retinal damage or retinopathy and you have been diagnosed with diabetes for over 10 years then we would not consider you for treatment as there are increased risks that make the surgery unsafe.

If you are not taking insulin, your blood sugar levels are well controlled and there are no signs of retinal damage then you are welcome to come to a consultation where we can your eyes and discuss suitability for surgery.  Please contact me on 01733 297 193 or email david.knight@optimax.co.uk if you wish to book the appointment or if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
David.
